Upskill (Members Only)
The Orthoptics Australia introduced Upskill in 2005 exclusively for OA members. Upskill aims to deliver intensive courses on various aspects of orthoptic clinical practice and workplace related topics. In general, courses include the opportunity to learn new or review existing skills and emphasise the learning of practical skills as well as covering underpinning theoretical knowledge. Places are limited to also allow participants opportunity for "hands on" and individual attention.

Module 7: Glaucoma Monitoring (Registration Full)
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of eye disease in Australia. Recent advances in imaging has seen the HRT and OCT play a greater role in the investigation and management of glaucoma. This module will provide orthoptists with the opportunity to learn to assess the optic nerve head and the retinal nerve fiber layer using imaging technology, ophthalmoscopy and photography.
The course will include the acquisition of skills in:
1. Examination of the optic nerve head
2. Interpretation of HRT and OCT outputs
3. Progression analysis of optic nerve and visual fields
4. Operation of the HRT and OCT instruments
5. Slit Lamp Indirect Ophthalmoscopy and photography
6. Types of glaucoma and the role of gonioscopy
7. Topical medications for glaucoma
Course StructureThis Upskill module is suitable for those with little or no experience in glaucoma or for orthoptists seeking to consolidate skills. A significant part of the Upskill will be devoted to learning the skill of examining the optic nerve head and interpreting imaging outputs. It will include lectures on each of the topic above followed by a practical component with the opportunity for hands on experience with HRT, OCT and slit lamp ophthalmoscopes.
The practical component will include both learning the technical skill of assessment and the interpretation of clinical findings. At the end case based examples will be presented for further discussion and learning opportunity.
About the Clinical Instructors: The Upskill course will be led by Luke Seesink and Martin Lee, senior orthoptists from The Eye Associates, who has developed considerable skill in glaucoma management. They work closely with A/Prof Ivan Goldberg and other doctors who are well known for their extensive Glaucoma expertise and the latest Glaucoma research
