Orthoptics Australia and RANZCO jointly and fully endorse the Policy Statement by the American Academy of Pediatrics (Section of Ophthalmology, Council on Children with Disabilities) the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus and the American Association of Certiffied Orthoptists. OA and RANZCO request parents, educators and health professionals pay particular attention to the summary of this policy statment.
The Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act regulates the refracting and prescribing of optical devices. As part of this legislation, orthoptists in all States and Territories are permitted to refract and prescribe glasses in certain situations.
