What is Orthoptics Awareness Week?
Orthoptics Awareness Week (OAW) promotes the valuable contribution orthoptics makes to eye health. This is a week for orthoptists, eye health professionals and patients to promote the orthoptic profession and celebrate the work they do.
In 2024 OAW will be celebrated from the 3rd – 7th Junes. The OAW campaign is connected with World Orthoptic Day which is held on the first Monday of June each year (3rd June 2024). This provides a greater opportunity to raise awareness of the Orthoptic profession on an international scale.

The theme for OAW 2024 - Seeing the potential of orthoptics.
The ‘Seeing the potential of orthoptics’ campaign aims to highlight the positive impact orthoptists have in eye health when they are enabled to work to their full scope of practice.
The 2024 theme has been chosen by OA in acknowledgment of the current Unleashing the Potential of our Health Workforce – Scope of Practice Review. The review is looking at the barriers and incentives for primary health care professionals working to their full scope of practice. It is funded by the Australian Government and independently led by Professor Mark Cormack.
What resources are available?
A feature article will be published online and as a hard copy in the June edition of Insight magazine. The focus piece will include three articles written by OA members who are making an impact in eye health by working to different areas of their scope.
How to get involved?
OAW Workplace / University celebration
Holding an OAW event in your place of work or study is a great way to celebrate and promote orthoptics. Celebrations could include morning teas, an information booth or a lunchbox session. To support OAW celebrations we have ordered OA themed ballons. If you would like ballons to decorate your celebration please just email office@orthoptics.org.au. Be sure to allow reasonable time for postage ahead of your event.
The OAW 2024 logo is available on the website. The image that can be printed out, put up around clinics and workplaces, or used in an email signature or on social media.
OAW Photo Competition
This year OA is holding a competition for best picture of an OAW celebration. The two best pictures will win a morning tea on OA.
To enter just send photos of your celebration to office@orthoptics.org.au for us to post on oA’s social media accounts. Or you can post them yourself and tag Orthoptics Australia.
